Ortega, a former RFA featherweight champ, hopped on De La Torre’s back after the initial flurry and cinched a rear-naked choke to put his opponent to sleep.
The featherweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FOX 12 preliminary card at San Jose’s SAP Center. It aired on FOX following select prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
The bout was waved off at the 1:39 mark of the first round, when referee John McCarthy peeled Ortega off De La Torre’s back as he began to go limp from the pressure of the choke.
Only moments before, Ortega was dealing with a flurry of punches from De La Torre, who charged after his opponent with punches at the opening bell.
Looking at his handiwork afterward, an excited Ortega exclaimed, “This is Gracie Breakdown 101 right now,” referring to the online instructional videos featuring Rener and Ryron Gracie that explain the use of the grappling art in MMA fights.
“I’m just incredibly happy to be on the big stage,” Ortega said. “I’m trying to bring positivity to this sport, and hopefully the fans can see that. I thought this fight was going to at least go two rounds and that we would stand and strike. I didn’t think I could get the submission on him, but he came at me aggressively and an opening appeared, and that was that. I’m ready for whatever the UFC throws at me next.”
Ortega is now 9-0 as a professional after a split call over Keoni Koch brought him the RFA belt in January. De La Torre remains winless in the octagon after a split-call loss to Mark Bocek in his debut in April.
