SAO PAULO – After nearly knocking Patrick Cummins out at the end of the first round, then struggling just to knock him down in the second, Glover Teixeira finally poured on enough punishment to convince referee Herb Dean to stop it.
After a brutal barrage of punches that left Cummins (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) woozy, but still standing, Teixeira (24-4 MMA, 7-2 UFC) finally earned the TKO stoppage at the 1:12 mark of Round 2.
The light heavyweight bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC Fight Night 77 event at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Cummins made his intentions in this bout known right away, as he shot for one takedown after another in the opening minutes of the fight, meeting little resistance as he took Teixeira to the mat. But even after putting Teixeira down, Cummins struggled to keep him there, which meant he had to face Teixeira’s punching power sooner or later.
The first signs of trouble came late in the first, as Teixeira unloaded with uppercuts and hooks that left Cummins on unsteady legs as the horn sounded to end the round. He hardly seemed recovered by the time the second frame started, and Teixeira immediately resumed his attack, battering Cummins from one of the cage to the other.
Finally, with Cummins being held up by the fence but offering nothing in the way of offense or defense, the referee Dean was compelled to move in and wave the fight off just to prevent any unnecessary damage. By then, the winner was clear, as Cummins seemed powerless to stop the onslaught, and Teixeira showed no signs of halting it.
“That was the plan – to knock him out in the second round,” Teixeira said. “Patrick is a really tough guy to knock out. He took hard shots in his previous fights, but I knew that with patience, waiting for the right time, that I would win.”
The win makes it two in a row inside the octagon for Teixeira. Cummins has lost two of his last three.
