RFA 25: Justin Lawrence tears through Toomer

April 11, 2015

Sam Toomer looked like he was more than game to stand and trade kicks with Justin Lawrence on Friday.

But then Lawrence (7-2) got busy, and got out of the cage with Toomer (9-1) in a relative hurry with a first-round TKO to retain his RFA featherweight title.

Toomer tried to open with some kicks to take advantage of his height advantage, but Lawrence answered right back and pushed forward with punches, then a roundhouse kick. Lawrence caught a Toomer kick, then punched him and dropped him down for a slam.

Once on the canvas, Lawrence took his time, but systematically started to break Toomer down. Eventually, with Toomer back on his feet in the closing minute of the first round, Lawrence hurt him, then started punishing him with knees to the body.

Toomer went back to the canvas, and Lawrence continued the onslaught of knees to the midsection, alternating punches to the head. Lawrence looked to the referee, wondering when a stoppage might come. When he kept on, he finally got it with five seconds to spare in the first.

Lawrence kept his RFA featherweight belt and won his third straight fight since being cut loose from the UFC on a twof-gith skid in 2013. All three of his wins since then have come under the RFA banner. Toomer suffered the first loss of his pro career after a pair of RFA wins in 2014 to get a shot at Lawrence’s belt.

RFA 25 took place at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card aired on AXS TV.
