Pedro Munhoz tears through Matt Hobar

June 1, 2014

SAO PAULO – The trouble for Matt Hobar started early in the first round with a head kick from Pedro Munhoz.

It ended moments later with a series of blistering punches as Munhoz (11-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) bounced a weary Hobar’s (8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) head off the mat with one shot after another until referee Mario Yamasaki called a stop to the bout at 2:47 of the first round.

The bantamweight bout opened up today’s TUF Brazil 3 Finale event at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims and a main card on FOX Sports 1.

For the few brief moments that he managed to keep his legs under him, things seemed to be going well enough in Hobar’s UFC debut. But after Munhoz slapped his shin across the American’s skull, he soon found himself reeling straight into one right hand after another.

Hobar didn’t go quietly after that opening salvo, however. After a guillotine attempt by Munhoz failed, Hobar managed to work back to his feet, only to be promptly pasted by a hard knee and sharp punch combination that snapped his head back and left him vulnerable to the takedown. With Hobar stuck on his back, Munhoz took the opportunity to posture up and drop bombs until Yamasaki had seen enough, which didn’t take long.

“I’ve been living in the U.S. for four years, and to fight in the city that I grew up in was an honor,” Munhoz said. “The fight was fantastic, a TKO in the first round, and in this match between Brazil and the USA, Brazil is 1-0.”

For Munhoz, the win is a rebound from his lone career loss to Raphael Assuncao in his UFC debut. For Hobar, it’s the first loss since 2012.
