UFC President Dana White today confirmed the fighters will meet in the headliner of UFC Fight Night 69, which takes place June 20 at O2 World Berlin in the German capital. The entire event streams on UFC Fight Pass.
White confirmed the main event with mmacrazytv.com following an initial report from kimura.se.
No other fights have been announced the card, which is just the UFC’s fourth in company history.
Gustafsson is ranked No. 4 and Teixeira is No. 8 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA light-heavyweight rankings.
Gustafsson looks to rebound from a January knockout loss to Anthony Johnson in a title eliminator. The 28-year-old Swede looked to earn another shot at reigning champion Jon Jones, who narrowly defeated him during a “Fight of the Year” performance in late 2013. Gustafsson rebounded with a second-round TKO victory over Jimi Manuwa in early 2014 before falling short to “Rumble” earlier this year.
Teixeira, meanwhile, finds himself in a must-win situation both for his contendership and his job security. The 35-year-old Brazilian made waves after winning his first five UFC fights and pushing his overall winning streak to 20 fights. However, he then suffered a title loss to Jones a year ago and followed it up with a lopsided unanimous-decision loss to Phil Davis in October.
