MINNEAPOLIS – Diego Nunes’ aggressive striking shut down Bart Palaszewski.
Featherweight Nunes nearly put away the IFL and WEC vet on several occasions but comfortably settled for a unanimous-decision win.
The bout served on the preliminary-card of UFC on FX 5, which took place Friday at Target Center in Minneapolis. It aired on FUEL TV prior to the FX-televised main card.
Nunes came out aggressively in the opening frame and caught Palaszewski with a hard right hand that opened a cut over the IFL vet’s left eye. But the takedown Nunes landed in the subsequent scramble prompted a guillotine attempt from Palaszewski that halted his momentum. Nunes worked free, but Palaszewski segued to a triangle, and he was forced to reset. When Palaszewski failed to control his posture, he landed several elbows from top position.
Hoping to double down, Nunes stood overhead and launched a punch. But the shot missed, and Palasewski scrambled to his feet. The escape from danger was only temporary, however, when Nunes dropped Palaszewski with another right hand. Swarming overhead, he nearly finished the fight with more big punches.
Nunes continued to find success at range in the second round, and Palaszewski was tentative. A spinning backfist staggered “Bartimus” and preceded another takedown for the Brazilian, and he continued to look for big shots overhead. Palaszewski again escaped but was slapped with a high kick to the head. Nunes used his legs more to punish those of Palazewski, whose combinations were easily intercepted and led to a takedown at the end of the frame.
The pair traded combinations early in the third, and Palaszewski connected with a short left hook that put Nunes on rollers. Palaszewski chased for the finish but wasn’t able to land a finishing blow before Nunes recovered. By then, the sting on Palaszewski’s punches had faded, and both missed with big punches. A spinning back-kick from Nunes landed heavy to the body, and another swinging punch brought another finish, but Palaszewski survived.
The vet’s hard nose wouldn’t pay off on the scorecards, however, with all three judges awarding Nunes the fight by scores of 30-27 (twice) and 29-28.
In five octagon appearances, Nunes (18-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) has alternated between wins and losses and gets back on the winning track after a decision loss to Dennis Siver. Palaszewski (36-16 MMA, 1-2 UFC), meanwhile, is now 1-3 in his past four outings.
