Casey vs. Carlos Junior set for UFC Fight Night 80 in Las Vegas

September 13, 2015

The UFC’s first of three straight days of events in Las Vegas in December is starting to come together with the apparent addition of two fights.

Kevin Casey (9-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) today published a photo on his Instagram account of him signing a contract to fight Antonio Carlos Junior (5-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 80. And Omari Akhmedov (15-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) used Instagram to announce a welterweight fight against Lyman Good (19-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) for the same card.

UFC officials have not yet made formal announcements of either booking.

UFC Fight Night 80 takes place Dec. 10 at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. The entire card streams on UFC Fight Pass. A fight between Michael Chiesa and Jim Miller thus far is the only other bout that has been reported to be targeted for the event, which will be followed by the TUF 22 Finale at the same venue on Dec. 11 and UFC 194 at MGM Grand Garden Arena on Dec. 12.

Akhmedov in June picked up a TKO win over Brian Ebersole in New Orleans when Ebersole couldn’t continue after Round 1 with a knee injury. That gave the Dagestan native back-to-back wins after a decision victory over Mats Nilsson at UFC 182 in January. That win got him back on track after a submission loss to Gunnar Nelson in March 2014 in London, which was his welterweight debut.

Good, the inaugural Bellator welterweight champion, came to the UFC earlier this year after going 3-0 for CFFC. His promotional debut was an impressive one. He stopped Andrew Craig with a second-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 71 in San Diego. He went 8-3 while with Bellator over a four-year stretch.

Casey, who was on Season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” lost a second-round TKO to Josh Samman at the TUF 17 Finale in April 2013. Then he picked up three straights wins under the RFA banner, including a first-round knockout to win the middleweight title in June 2014. That got him a call from the UFC.

But after a knockout win over Bubba Bush at UFC 175 in July 2014, he tested positive for the banned steroid drostanolone and was suspended. His win was flipped to a no-contest. He returned in July against Ildemar Alcantara and won a unanimous decision in San Diego.

Carlos Junior, who won the “TUF: Brazil 3” heavyweight crown in May 2014, dropped to light heavyweight for his second fight, but lost a decision to Patrick Cummins this past December. In June, he dropped another weight class and looked impressive in his middleweight debut, a third-round submission of fellow “TUF” winner Eddie Gordon in Florida.
